CPI (M) TAKES UP DALIT WORKER’S MURDER ISSUE IN UTTAR PRADESH

IN Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh, a dalit landless worker, Sukai Ram, was murdered during the night of April 8-9 and his battered body was found on the main road near Atraulia block headquarters not far from his village. The police removed his body for post-mortem without even trying to contact his family.

People spontaneously collected when this news spread, his family members also arrived and all of them resorted to a roadblock. The district secretary of the CPI (M) and some party workers were also present. The police soon arrived and the SHO assured the agitators that the culprits would be arrested in 48 hours.

Unfortunately, no action was taken. Even the mandatory payment of one lakh ex gratia to the orphaned children, who had lost their mother earlier, was not made.

All other political parties in the area, including the ruling BSP, have not done anything. In fact, there have been reports that the culprits are being shielded by political leaders. This has angered the people in the area and this was expressed in their decision to boycott a BSP minister’s programme in the area on May Day. As a result, the programme was cancelled.

On May 2, the CPI (M) organised a dharna at the spot where Sukai Ram's body was found. Central Committee member Subhashini Ali also participated in the programme which was presided over by Ved Upadhyaya, its district secretary. The SDM then came and assured that the ex gratia would be paid in a week. Sukai Ram's daughters responded angrily, saying that they wanted justice, not money.

Demanding the presence of a senior police officer, all the participants, which included a large number of women, blocked the road for nearly an hour and got up only when the SP arrived. He announced that the police now knew who the culprits were and two of their relatives had just been taken into custody. He assured the people there that the culprits would definitely be booked.

What was remarkable was the tremendous resentment against the government among the people who all belonged to the dalit community. The participation by dalit youth and women in large numbers and their anger and militancy were all remarkable.

The agitation received good press publicity and is now being widely discussed and welcomed.

WEST BENGAL BENGAL CIVIC POLLS - BUDDHADEB CALLS FOR DEFEATING THE UNHOLY ALLIANCE

THE civic polls being held for 81 self-governing institutions in the cities and townships spread across Bengal are a political battle, as are all elections. The enemy of the people are standing by to wreak havoc and let slip the dogs of war. The masses must come forward to rip apart the gathering darkness of the storm cloud on the political scene in Bengal, re-elect the CPI(M) and the Left Front by big, emphatic margins, and ensure that the process of development and democratisation continue apace.

Thus said Bengal chief minister and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, while he was addressing a very crowded media conference at the Muzaffar Ahmad Bhavan at noon on 16 May.

There is a twin process of industrialisation and urbanisation in Bengal under Left Front governance. The process needs to be made faster. There is a continuing attempt to maintain a balance between urban and rural, between the townships and the cities, between the cities and the metropolis.

The Left Front has been engaged in this task from back in 1978 when much earlier to the concerned Constitutional proviso coming into force, the civic bodies and the Panchayats had been made into viable self-governing institutions. The Left Front is the founder of the implementational concept of local institutions and this has been a unique achievement in the country.

The Left Front has included such elements in the civic bodies like timely elections, citizens rights ensured, voting age brought down to 18 years, reservations set in place, putting in place the mayor-in-council, borough committees, and making them operative, along with the latest addition of a citizens’ charter in each municipality.

Critical of the Congress, Buddhadeb pointed out that the successive Congress-run central governments deprived the state of funds due. The Trinamul board at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) sat on its hands and spent funds on non-essential items of expense. The Left-run board of the KMC have been seen to go all out with pro-people development programme implemented in a balanced manner. He also pointed out that the union government gives back but 32 per cent of the tax it collects from the states. The demand of elevating this amount to at least 50 per cent has been ignored by the Congress-run central governments in succession. The state finance commission has been engaged in allowing 50 per cent of the plan budget to be spent at the local level.

Noting that it was always difficult to comment on the intransigent ways of the Trinamul Congress and its partners in the right and to the extreme Left, Buddhadeb pointed to the rainbow alliance with political fuel from forces of reaction abroad and said they must be defeated and defeated comprehensively. It was dangerous of the Trinamul Congress to speak of an impending communal violence to precede the civic polls.

The outfit is dangerous to the point that they would see a violent scenario overtaking the municipal elections – ‘violence, threats, and lies,’ comprise the slogan-mongering of the Trinamul Congress. Buddhadeb pooh-poohed the claim of the Trinamul Congress that there were no ‘Maoists’ in Bengal.

On the other hand he asserted that the outfit was engaged in preparing the ground for the left sectarians in Bengal In passing he also pointed to the internecine killings that had started to take place at Nandigram and surrounding areas amongst the assassins of the Trinamul Congress itself, and called upon everybody to maintain amity, through discussions when necessary.

Buddhadeb commented in this context that two recent developments were of an alarming nature. The RSS spokesperson has called upon to ensure that the Trinamuli leader becomes the Bengal chief minister. Secondly, clutches of people from the BJP have joined the Trinamul Congress but they have not given up their RSS memberships. The left sectarians had long back exposed their preference to see the Trinamuli chieftain as the next chief minister of Bengal.

It was imperative, concluded Buddhadeb, for the masses of the people especially the young to come forward, take part in the democratic process and ensure a big victory of the Left Front in the upcoming civic polls. The people have already realised the Left stood for progress, for development for amity and for democracy. In responding to queries Buddhadeb said, among other things that only the state government could bring forward the date of elections for the Vidhan Sabha polls.

CPI (M) PROTESTS INFLAMMATORY TRINAMUL PROPAGANDA

On May 20, Sitaram Yechury and Basudev Acharia met the union home minister and handed him over a letter on the unsubstantiated and wild allegations levelled by the Trinamul Congress (TMC). The text of the letter follows.

WE seek to draw your attention and intervention in a serious situation that is developing in the course of the current election campaign to municipal corporations in the state of West Bengal.

The enclosed letter from the chairman of the Left Front, Shri Biman Basu, explains how the Trinamul Congress leader and union railway minister is deliberately stoking panic and terror amongst the Muslim minority population, claiming that she has secret information that a section of the police will help the Left Front in unleashing communal violence in the state.

You are surely aware that during the last thirty three years of the Left Front government in West Bengal, the state and its people have seen unprecedented communal harmony and fraternity. This record makes all of us proud in India and is often portrayed as the symbol of India’s strength in secular democracy. You will surely agree that any effort to blemish this record are not in the interests of our country’s unity and integrity. Further, casting such wild and unsubstantiated allegations, especially by a union cabinet minister, also violates the provisions of the Representation of People Act 1951.

If indeed the TMC leader and union minister does possess some secret information, we request you as the union home minister to obtain such information and act on it in consultation with the state government. If, on the contrary, there is no such information, as surely is the case, then may we request you to set at rest the apprehensions and tensions that have resulted from the union minister’s utterances.

DEVELOPMENTAL WORKS OF KOLKATA MUNICIPAL CORPORATION

IN a free-ranging interview, Bikash Bhattacharyya, noted legal authority and the serving mayor of the vast metro of Kolkata spoke to People's Democracy on the developmental works that had been undertaken during the tenure of the Left Front board between 2005 and 2010. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) goes to gather the people’s verdict on 30 May. Excerpts follow.

WATER SUPPLY

Improving water supply, noted Bikash, ‘has been a major focus of the LF-run board over the past half-a-decade.’ The efforts have yielded results. The piped water supply of potable water has been vastly augmented via commissioning of water treatment plants, booster pumping stations, reservoirs, and what he called ‘headworks’ that included covered, underground reservoirs, sinking a big number of tubewells, and revamping the distribution system itself.

Giving examples, the mayor pointed to the commissioning of a 260 MGD water treatment plant at Palta, water-treatment plant and pumping station at Watgunge and Gardenreach, replacement of vital electrical installations at the big pumping station at Auckland Square near the La Martinier’s school at the very heart of the metro, and laying of no less than 200 km of big dia pipes across and around Kolkata – a massive project.

SEWERAGE AND DRAINAGE

Water-logging has been made much of in the corporate media while ranting and raving against the Left-run KMC board. Kolkata as we know has a saucer-like shape and the main drainage to the east of the city has sadly given away to urbanisation with the horizon-touching stretches of shallow water bodies disappearing.

The principal sewer networks were laid in the colonial period and it consists of a century-old brick sewer of 180 km or more. What causes water logging, other than heavy rainfall?

Bikash informed us of the following causes:

Reduction of hydraulic capacity of the sewerage system due to silting
Poor and collapsing sewer lines
Destruction of wetlands that we noted above
Old and creaking pumping machines
Silting up of the ‘outfall’ canals around the metro

he Left-run KMC has undertaken over the past five years a series of measures through upgradation of the sewerage and drainage systems with gradual replacement of the brick stricture with fibre-based gigantic sized tubes – a costly and time-consuming operation. We cannot stop water from being logged, but we could ensure that the accumulated aqua disappeared rapidly enough was how the mayor would put it. The measures taken include clearing the lines, boosting the pumping stations, and re-excavation of the drainage canals.

SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

This is a bane for any metropolis. The Left-led board has tackled this issue in a uniquely pro-people way. The capacity to collect waste has been increased by nearly 70 per cent and 65 per cent of all households stand covered with more in the pipeline, so to speak. The resources and machines used for waste management have been increased manifold. New disposal sites have been set up with facilities for conversion of waste into useful material. Waste is used for landfill with an environmental-friendly outlook.

PRO-POOR ACTIVITIES

The mayor pointed out how 30 per cent of the metro populace still lived in bustees (there are officially 5500 such ‘colonies’) and, thanks to the pro-rich bias of the successive union governments bent on depriving the states of their due share of finance, 22 per cent of the metro population yet languish beneath the poverty line if we are to go by the 2001 census figures.

The mayor emphasised on the fact of realisation of the KMC that unless the poor underwent uplift and rehabilitation, the city itself could never flourish as a viable urban centre with a vast hinterland. While the direct pro-poor expenditure back in 2004-2005 stood at Rs 56.16 crore, the present figure is a thumping Rs 138.18 crore.

The expenditure on providing basic services to the bustees has virtually increased a hundredfold. The water infrastructure development mean that bustees now have more in the way of piped water supply, better sewerage/drainage systems to access, better and improved lighting system, and better and longer metalled roads for the people to travel on.

The additional water supply lines measure 47,270 metres, the sewerage, 417,901 km, and roads, a whopping 857,083 km. There are now 113,854 modern latrines, and the ‘old’ hexagonal latrines are being converted to modern toilet facilities. A total of 24,829 lamp posts lit up the bustees.

Community halls have been set ‘up and running,’ the internal pathways of nearly all the bustees have been made into paved ones, whilst on the social side, thousands of mohalla-level communities have been set up to provide gainful employment through self-help and small-scale, plus job-linked training programmes. A BPL list has been published and is again been updated, along with a plan for minority development plan for the metro.

Other sectors where initiates have been set in place in the metro under the leadership of the Left-run KMC board are:

Health
Education
Roads
Disaster management, and
Acquisition of land with compensation/ rehabilitation

The past five years have seen the face of Kolkata change for the better. Much more remains to be done. Yet, to the eternal credit of the CPI(M) and the Left Front, the fact remains that the population overload of Kolkata is not increasing exponentially with more population flowing into the developing small and medium townships across Bengal. We shall look to a better Kolkata every time we look on her was how Bikash Bhattacharyya put it.

CPI (M) ON DISSOLUTION OF MEDICAL COUNCIL OF INDIA

19 MAY 2010

THE POLIT BUREAU OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) HAS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

The removal of Ketan Desai from the post of Director of MCI is a much belated and required step. The prima facie evidence of corruption at the top levels of MCI required firm Government intervention. The CPI (M) had urged the Government in Parliament to take action to remove Desai, ensure accountability and Parliamentary oversight on such bodies like the MCI through required amendments to the MCI Act, while protecting the autonomy of the MCI.

However utilizing the need for removal of Desai, the Government has brought an ordinance to dissolve the entire council shortly after the Parliament session. This shows the absence of minimum democratic norms. The Government should have taken Parliament into confidence before dissolving an autonomous body set up by an Act of Parliament.

Secondly, since health is a state subject and medical education is on the concurrent list it was mandatory for the Central Government to have consulted State Governments by calling an emergency meeting of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare. In the dissolved Medical Council, State Governments had their representatives. The seven member Board of Governors now appointed through the ordinance consists entirely of centrally nominated persons. This is a violation of federal principles and is an injustice to the States.

The ordinance reflects a policy of over-centralisation of powers in the hands of the Central Government which does damage to the federal character of the Constitution. The CPI (M) calls upon the Central Government to immediately call a meeting of the Central Council and ensure that the rights of the States are not bypassed.

CPI (M) DEMANDS RESIGNATION OF UNION COMMUNICATION MINISTER SHRI A. RAJA

20 MAY 2010

THE POLIT BUREAU OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) HAS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

The outcome of the 3G spectrum auction convincingly proves that Union Communication Minister, Shri A. Raja, was clearly involved in corrupt practices by selling 2G spectrum to some industrialists by manipulating TRAI recommendations. Whereas 3G spectrum could fetch Rs. 70,000 crores, 2G spectrum was sold at a paltry sum of Rs. 2000 crores only. Shri Raja had done so by blatantly violating the law causing a huge loss to the public exchequer.

Despite repeated demands made in parliament and outside, Shri A. Raja is nonchalantly continuing to stick to his position. Such a situation cannot be allowed to be continued.

The CPI (M) demands that Shri A. Raja should immediately resign from his post pending a high power enquiry into the entire 2G spectrum scam.

If the minister refuses to resign, the Prime Minister should sack him to maintain the dignity of the high post Shri A. Raja is holding in the Government.

CPI (M) - NO FDI IN RETAIL TRADE

25 May 2010

PRESS STATEMENT

THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) AND THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA HAVE ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

NO FDI IN RETAIL TRADE

The Central Government is once again considering the opening up of multi-brand retail trade to Foreign Direct Investment. The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion is pushing for such a move.

Retail trade in the country employs lakhs of people, whose livelihood will be jeopardized if big foreign companies like Walmart and Tesco are allowed into the retail trade.

It is strange that the UPA government is contemplating this step when the Congress Party itself has taken a stand against the entry of foreign companies in retail trade as stated in its resolution in the AICC session held in Hyderabad in 2006.

The Left parties have consistently opposed the entry of foreign companies into retail trade. A wide spectrum of political parties, retail trade associations and public opinion is against such a move.

The UPA government should desist from allowing FDI in multi-brand retail trade.

MANGALORE AIR CRASH

22 May 2010

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:

The Polit Bureau of the CPI (M) is shocked at the crash of the Air India Express plane at Mangalore Airport. It is deeply grieved at the loss of lives of around 160 passengers and crew.

The Polit Bureau extends its heartfelt sympathy to all those who have lost their family members in the crash.

A proper enquiry must be expeditiously conducted to ascertain the cause for the crash and to take remedial measures if necessary.

CPI (M) UPA GOVERNMENT NOT TO PROCEED WITH FTA WITH EU

23 May 2010

THE POLIT BUREAU OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) HAS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

On FTA with European Union

The UPA Government is set to conclude negotiations on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement by October 2010.Despite this having far reaching consequences, the negotiations are being conducted with extreme secrecy and keeping the Indian Parliament and the State Governments in the dark.

The FTA with EU seeks to lower Indian tariffs to zero or near zero levels for90% of agricultural products, while leaving untouched the huge subsidies EU agriculture enjoys. This will allow EU to dump subsidized European farm products in the Indian market. We have already seen the impact of such FTAs on Indian agriculture with cheap palm oil imports destroying domestic production.

On Intellectual Property, the EU is asking for TRIPS plus provisions and re-writing of Indian patent and copyright laws. That the Government is even discussing the re-writing of such laws with the EU shows that the scant respect the current UPA Government has for the Parliament. Accepting product patents for drugs and pharmaceuticals under TRIPS has already restricted the access to cheap medicines for the Indian people. A further set of pro-monopoly and pro-corporate measures being demanded by EU – extension of patent life by five years, reduction of farmers rights in favour of agri-business, data exclusivity, etc., are all geared to harm the interests of the people further and their access to medicines, seeds and food.

The EU is also asking India to brand as “counterfeit” all pharmaceutical products that are not in conformity with EU’s patent laws that India exports to other countries through EU territory. This is a crude attempt to justify the illegal seizures that it has carried out recently on which India and Brazil is areplanning to invoke WTO dispute settlement provisions. It is surprising that India is even consenting to discuss such issues with EU.

The India EU FTA also proposes massive cuts in import duties on industrial goods, which will greatly impact India’s manufacturing sector that is already facing job losses and shrinking markets. The investment and services provisions are asking for financial liberalisation that the UPA Government wanted to carry out and the Left opposed.

While India largely uses tariff barriers to protect its industry and agriculture, EU uses non-tariff barriers such as engineering and phyto-sanitary standards and also heavy subsidies, particularly in agriculture. In these discussions, the focus is almost entirely on tariffs and creating TRIPS Plus provisions – it is completely skewed for opening the Indian market to EU and not India gaining market access. While India is discussing amending its laws, such a discussion on EU’s laws and non-trade barriers are not even on the agenda.

CPI (M) demands that the UPA Government should not proceed any further on the India-EU FTA unless all current proposals, negotiating drafts are debated and discussed in Parliament and with State Governments.

HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANISATIONS SUPPORTING MAOIST CUASE UNDER SURVELIENCE OF THE UNION GOVERNMENT

New Delhi, May 18 (IANS) At least 57 civil rights groups, trade unions and student organisations as well as the Hurriyat Conference are under the constant vigil of intelligence agencies for their alleged links with the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist, according to an official document.A home ministry circular alerts heads of paramilitary forces and police in Maoist-affected states that the CPI-Maoist has 57 “front bodies” of peasants, labourers, women, students, tribals and trade unions who have helped the banned outfit raise the level of its tactical warfare, including winning court battles and getting their arrested leaders released.

The circular, according to sources, was sent out days before the home ministry in a stringent warning to civil society groups said that those who speak in favour of Maoist guerrillas will face legal action and 10 years’ imprisonment under Section 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

The home ministry on April 6 said the government had noticed that some Maoist leaders were directly contacting certain NGOs and intellectuals to propagate their ideology and “persuade them to take steps (and) support the CPI-Maoist ideology”.

The circular from the Intelligence Bureau says that about 30 of these organisations were actively involved in popularising the Maoist ideology also in the states that are not affected by Left-wing extremism, like the national capital region, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Haryana, an official said, requesting not to be named.

Among the groups being watched include People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) that has Justice (retd) Rajinder Sachar as one of its key members. The group was formed in 1976 by Jai Prakash Narain.

The others being closely watched are the Krantikari Lok Adhikar Aangathan of Uttarakhand, the Revolutionary People’s Front of Kerala, the Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha, a political party that has fielded candidates for the Madhya Pradesh elections, the Disha Sanskritik Manch of Haryana and the Bandi Mukti Committee of West Bengal.

The official said that these organisations, according to the IB circular, were “working for the cause of the Maoists”.

“It is after these front bodies have done the groundwork that the armed activity (of the CPI-Maoist) would start. These organisations supplement the war effort of the party,” the circular claims, apprehending that the guerrillas may launch more “well-planned and focussed” attacks outside their strongholds in Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal and other affected states.

The Leftist guerrillas, according to the IB, are also planning to reach out to other terrorist and separatist groups in the country including the United Liberation Front of Asom and the Hurriyat Conference in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Though the intelligence inputs don’t suggest any strategic alliance but Maoists have started corresponding with them,” said the official.

END COMMUNAL PROFILING - CPI (M)

15 May 2010

THE POLIT BUREAU OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) HAS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

The illegal detention and arrest of Maulana Nurul Huda is a reminder of the deep-tooted prejudice that exists in sections of the law enforcement agencies against Muslims. It was bad enough that he was off loaded from the Emirates flight on the basis of a trivial complaint but for the Delhi Police to register a case against him and to have sent him to Tihar Jail is condemnable and unacceptable. Clearly while caution and alertness is required from all official agencies against any terrorist threats, the kind of community profiling which is reflected in this case puts a question mark on the credibility of law enforcement agencies.

It is necessary for the Home Ministry to send a stern message against such community profiling.

The case against Nurul Huda must be withdrawn forthwith. The CPI (M) also demands that he be fully compensated for the losses he suffered as a result of wrongful detainment.

LEFTIST PARTIES IN INDIA CONDEMN RISING PRICES AND INDISCRIMINATE KILLING BY MAOISTS

LEFT PARTIES STATEMENT

15 MAY 2010

THE LEFT PARTIES, THE CPI (M), CPI, RSP AND AIFB MET TODAY AND ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

FOOD SECURITY - ANTI-PRICE RISE MOVEMENT

The Left parties took stock of the ongoing movement against price rise and related issues. It decided to hold a national convention on price rise, food security and connected issues in the beginning of July, from where the future course of action will be announced.

POSCO STRUGGLE: STOP USE OF FORCE

The Left parties condemn the firing and the resort to force by the armed police against thousands of men and women who were resisting and blocking the predatory moves of Posco to take over large tracts of fertile land in Jagatsingpur-Paradeep area of Orissa.

Today more that 40 platoons of armed forces were mobilised. They moved down to the Posco site and confronted the thousands of men and women who have been sitting on dharna for the last several months. The armed police resorted to tear gas, lathi charge and fired with rubber bullets in order to disperse the protesters who have now retreated to the villages. This has caused injuries to more than a hundred, including 60 women. The CPI MP of Jagatsingpur was taken into custody the previous night. State CPI and CPI (M) leaders were present on the spot when the firing took place. Canards are being spread by the government that some of the protesters threw bombs. This is a total falsehood.

The people were also protesting against the Posco’s move to have a captive port alongside the existing Paradeep port, which will have an adverse impact on the Paradeep port. Posco is also proposing to have captive iron ore mines instead of purchasing ore from the Orissa Mining Corporation. The proposal of Posco to draw water from the Mahanadi Barrage will seriously affect the irrigation system and also damage the ecological balance in the region. Ignoring all these concerns the Centre and the state governments have been backing Posco in their efforts.

The Left parties demand that the state government stop the use of force against the agitators.

MAOIST KILLINGS IN WEST BENGAL CONDEMNED

The Left parties strongly condemn the killing of four CPI (M) workers, all of them agricultural labourers, in the West Midnapore district and one activist in Purulia district of West Bengal by the Maoists. It calls upon all democratic forces to condemn such violence.

CPI (M) CONDEMNS GHASTLY BUTCHERY OF INNOCENT PEOPLE IN DANTEWARA BY PERVERTED MAOISTS ON 17-05-2010

18 May 2010

THE POLIT BUREAU OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) HAS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT:

The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemns the ghastly killing of 35 persons including 24 civilians in Dantewada in Bastar by Maoists in a landmine blast yesterday.

The attack on the private passenger bus by the Maoists only highlights their bankrupt policies of attacking ordinary citizens in various parts of the country including tribals who refuse to accept their dictates.

The CPI (M) appeals to the people to raise their voice against the murderous attacks on people and their livelihood and resist their depredations against peaceful citizens.

CPI (M) CONDEMNS MAOIST KILLINGS IN WEST BENGAL

15 May 2010

Press Statement

THE POLIT BUREAU OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDIA (MARXIST) HAS ISSUED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT
:

The brutal killings of the five CPI (M) members and supporters in West Midinapore and Purulia districts in West Bengal on a single day, May 14, by Maoist gangs is yet another instance of the true nature of the Maoists. It gives the lie to the manufactured campaign that the Maoists are engaged in a struggle to defend the cause of the tribal people and other oppressed sections.

The Maoists killed four CPI (M) supporters Nazrul Mir, Sanatan Ahir, Swapan Ahir and Ashok Ahir in Chandavilla village in Binpur-2 Block of West Midnapore by taking them out of their homes in the middle of the night. Their bodies were found near the Highway, bearing marks of torture. All the killed were agricultural labourers.

Another CPI (M) activist, Srikanata Mahato, was picked up from his house in Pathardi village in Arsha Police station area in Purulia district and shot death after his family members were beaten up.

With these murders, the number of CPI (M) members and supporters killed by the Maoists since the Lok Sabha elections in the three districts of West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura is now 121. They all mostly came from tribal and poor backgrounds.

The civil rights groups and intellectuals who support the Maoists by speaking out only against the police and paramilitary operations must answer the question – are they defending the Maoists so that they carry on such killings of political opponents with impunity?

The CPI (M) will continue to fight the Maoists politically and organizationally with all the resources at its command. It will expose the game of the Maoists who are out to help the anti-Communist forces like the Trinamul Congress in West Bengal.

The Polit Bureau expresses its deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the martyred comrades.
