RELIEF FOR BHOPAL GAS VICTIMS

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, THE HINDU DATED 11-08-2012

RELIEF FOR BHOPAL GAS VICTIMS

The Supreme Court order that the Empowered Monitoring Committee should ensure that the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy get better health care is welcome. But it would have been good if the initiative had come from the executive. It is the responsibility of the state to provide better health facilities to its people. The Supreme Court order points to growing judicial activism, which is not good for the functioning of the executive. Judicial activism is a corrective, which should not be used much.

One wishes the action had been taken by the Madhya Pradesh government and the Centre. One full generation has suffered untold misery due to apathy towards the gas tragedy victims. Successive governments could get them neither adequate compensation nor give them succour.
