This country is located in North West Europe and also has some islands in the Caribbean. The people here are called the Dutch. The Dutch colonised several parts of the world before World War II. One of their colonies was present day Indonesia, which they valued for timber and the cash crops it could produce. The Netherlands is culturally rich, with great painters, scientists and architects proving their mettle even in the 17th century. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632 – 1723) was a Dutch tradesman and scientist who has come to be known as the father of microbiology. He handcrafted his own microscopes and was the first in the world to describe the presence of organisms with just a single cell!
