A smile that links humanity and nature; a smile that is enigmatic; a smile that reflects an overall harmony: all these ideas correspond to the smile that renowned Italian artist achieved in his painting, the Mona Lisa. A half-length portrait of a woman seated in a chair, the painting is among the best known and most visited in the world, and is also extensively sung and written about.
Believed to have been painted between 1503 and 1506, the painting was acquired by King Francis I of France and belongs to the French Republic. On display at the Louvre Museum, the picture recently became the first to be beamed to the moon. This transmission is believed to be a major advance in laser communication at interplanetary distances.
