A barbecue is a method of cooking food by placing it on a grill over a wood fire. This is usually done in an open space. It is believed that the word barbecue originates from the word barabica which belongs to the Taino people of the Caribbean. In that language the word translates as “sacred fire pit”. While initially people used to cook only meat in this fashion, later people have started introducing vegetables and mushrooms into barbecue. In many American countries the style of cooking barbecue is very typical of the place. It is mostly pork or beef that they cook with a sauce that marks it out as coming from that state. For instance, Alabama is famous for barbecues pork served with a distinctive white sauce.
