LITTLE ICE AGE
Little Ice Age
Little Ice Age does not refer to the true ice age, it was coined by Francois E Matthes into a scientific literature in the year 1939. It is a period of cooling which followed the Medieval Warm Period. It has always been defined as a period from the 16th to the 19th century (from 1350 to 1850) but many disagree with the dates.
According to NASA, it is a cold period between 1550 AD and 1850AD which also had three extremely cold intervals. Cyclical lows in solar radiation, increased volcanic activity, changes in the ocean circulation, changes in global climate and decreased human population are believed to be some of the causes for this. During this time, Timbuktu was flooded 13 times by the Niger river.
