OPTICAL FIBRE
Optical fibre
Optical fibres are flexible, transparent fibres made of glass (silica) or plastic that serves as a medium to transmit light from one end to another. Acting as a waveguide or light pipe, they are widely used in fibre optic communications permitting transmission over long distances at higher bandwidths.
Optical fibres can carry more data than electrical cables and they are also immune to electrical interference. This allows them to protect communications equipment in high voltage environments which include metallic structures that are prone to lightning strikes.
